Doing Business in Brazil
I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from my trip to San Paolo representing the World Trade Center this past spring. I went to Brazil representing several interests from the WTC, to an Atlanta incubator, to assisting Brazilian companies wanting to come to the US to do business, to my own company looking for opportunities in Brazil. So I crammed a little Portuguese study, hoping that my Spanish background would get me by with minimal Portuguese knowledge, and flew off to an unfamiliar country.
What I found was an emerging and bustling economy ready to do business with the world. In the city of Campinas, the business environment is on the verge of a breakthrough, not unlike that of the US in the 50s after WWII. The big difference is that the attitude, and the business opportunity, is more like Silicone Valley.
The open and inviting environment was evident everywhere and was quite invigorating. Business and government leaders in Campinas are very interested in collaborating with and learning the best practices from companies around the world. The business community there is sponging up knowledge and looking for expansion opportunities with a lot of help from local government officials.
In the short time I was there, my business model for part-time executive chief legal officers garnered a lot of interest. The local mayors identified companies who could benefit from my business and expressed an interest in making connections for a successful start to a Palladium CLO subsidiary in Sao Paulo. A local entrepreneurial magazine interviewed me for an article and a Brazilian cable station produced a video of the success of my trip.
